Character: Arpia Silen [ Demon Bird Silen ] From: Devilman (Live Movie version)  Debut: 7th August 2005 - World Cosplay Summit Contest at Aichi Expo - Nagoya, Japan Awards: Best individual cosplayer at World Cosplay Summit 2005 Special prize at Lucca Comics 2005 THE GALLERY shots: 53  [ photo session by Maurizio Montani - Ramak ] WHAT ABOUT & MAKING OF difficulty: Questo costume ha rappresentato per me una sfida personale notevole, da cui sono uscita ampiamente ripagata, in ogni senso, trattandosi della prima volta che realizzo tutto un cosplay in piena autonomia, senza contribuiti esterni. Valutavo da tempo l’idea di cimentarmi con questo capolavoro, nonostante l’originale del film fosse sostanzialmente frutto di ritocchi in cg, così con la candidatura al WCS mi si è presentata l’occasione adeguata per provarci davvero. Andiamo per ordine. Gli artigli sono realizzati con scaglie di lattice schiumato, dipinto e sagomato a dovere e poi incollato con la colla a caldo su calzari e copribraccia elastici; nella fattispecie le zampe sono imbottite di gommapiuma e cucite a parte una ad una. Il body invece è un semplice body bianco senza spalline cui sono state incollate le piccole piume tutto intorno e le lunghe piume di struzzo per simulare la coda dietro; il collarino, un vezzoso dettaglio, è costituito interamente di strass e piume. Veniamo ora alla componente più importante, ovvero il copricapo alato, grande e magnificente. Si tratta infatti di circa tre metri di apertura. Per ottenere una simile struttura innanzitutto ho disegnato su fogli di carta da taglio il modello della grandezza completa che volevo ottenere. La struttura di base, tripartita, è tutta in fil di ferro leggero, intrecciato ad hoc, e sagomato appositamente come una calotta attorno alla mia testa. Quindi ho ricoperto l’intelaiatura di gomma piuma molto sottile (spessa mezzo centimetro) abbondando specialmente nella parte interna che appoggia sul capo; la gomma piuma è stata sua volta ricoperta di fodera bianca per evitare si vedesse lo stacco delle piume incollate direttamente su di essa (la gomma piuma tende ad ingiallire col tempo). Quindi ho diviso tutte le piume (di tacchino americano) per lunghezza e per direzione (destre e sinistre) e ho iniziato ad incollarle una per volta partendo dall’alto. Anche qui ci sono dei piccoli trucchi per ottenere un effetto più naturale nella disposizione del tutto, come pure per sorreggere l’intero peso della struttura (8 kg circa) senza che ceda in avanti o indietro, ma credo di essermi dilungata anche troppo, buona visione! ^_^ This costume was a real challenge for my skill, which largely paid in spades, since it was the very first time I made a cosplay all by myself and without any help. I had been thinking about attempting to reproduce this masterpiece, despite the fact the original one from Devilman the movie was largely created in CG. The entry in the WCS was the perfect occasion to try it for real. Claws are made with latex which I painted and shaped to my needs before using hot glue to glue it to rubberbands which I then wrapped around my arms and legs. Legs are stuffed with foam rubber and sewed separately one by one. The leotard I wear is a simple with leotard with no holding stripes on which I glued plenty of little feathers all around and some ostrich feathers on the back to simulate a tail. The little collar, a charming detail, is made entirely of strass and feathers. And here we come to the most important part: the big and magnificent winged hat. The wingspan is about three meters wide. To make it possible I started drawing on large sheets of paper the model of what I wanted to achieve in real scale. The main structure is divided in three parts and is entirely made of wireframe, weaved to my needs and shaped like a dome around my head. Then I covered the structure with very thin sheets of foam rubber (half centimeter thick) using plenty of it in the inner part of the dome where my head goes. The foam rubber has been in turn covered with white fabric to avoid it being visible among the feathers I glued to it afterwards (foam rubber turns yellow with aging). After that I split all my feathers (American turkey) and grouped them for length and direction (left or right) and I started to glue them to the white fabric one by one starting from the top of the wings. Little tricks that help to give a more natural effect and to keep the whole stuff (about 8 Kg) on my head avoiding it fall forward and backward have been used, but I think I’ve already written too much.
